Ardis says if nicotine wasn't necessary for health we wouldn't have nicotinic receptors.

In fact the nicotinic receptor is for something that isn't nicotine, it's for the neuro transmitter acetylcholine, it got the name nicotinic receptor because it happens that nicotine also binds to acetylcholine receptors.

I found that being exposed to second hand tobacco smoke tended to cause disrupted sleep patterns for me & it turns out that messing about with normal acetylcholine receptor function & operation can cause disrupted sleep patterns.
